¡Adios Allergy!

Raquel Zimmermann for Alexander McQueen's Spring 2013 campaign shot by David Sims.

Spring is around the corner and I couldn't be more happy! Though I thought I should give a friendly reminder to all of you who nearly use to scratch their eyes out and can't make that nose stop running at this time of the year –

Start having your honey!

I have done this for quite some years now and it really works! It's such a relief to be able to enjoy the spring without being tired and a total mess.

Raw locally produced honey is a pure and simple saviour if you suffer from pollen allergy. No more sneeze thanks to bees. Could it be more wonderful?

I've written about this before so read more HERE on how you do.

Happy spring! xx

Hot Hero

If you follow me on Instagram (@saemlstaint) you might have seen my latest post of what I'm up to this week? Well, if not I've finally decided to bite the bullet and start cleaning out my closet. This time with no mercy, at all. It was a bit hard at first, putting away those things I have so many memories with. Yes, I'm pretty sentimental, but on the other hand it felt so refreshing when I once got going.

In the middle of all this chaos I realized how many shirts, jackets and pants I never bother to use. Not that I don't like them, quite the opposite, but for the simple reason of laziness and the fact that I don't bring out the iron and spend half an hour of my time to make these pieces decent and wearable. I frankly don't. And who really does, I wonder? Thinking of it makes me sad. It's crazy even. So, last night I promised myself (and all my fabric friends) – this has to end. I'm investing in a steamer!

Lately I've read and heard a lot of positive things about the Swedish company The Steamery. This is their travel steamer – a handheld hero ready to do its job in just 25 seconds! Small, light and easy to use. Just like I want it. So, once and for all; those unworn stunners gonna see the sunlight and I guess this white wonder is the one preparing them for their premiere!

How To Keep Skin
Hydrated Through The Winter

We're right in the middle of it and let's face it - we'll be kept in its grip for three more month, more or less. I'm talking about the dreadful winter.

Harsh winds, temperatures below zero and dry indoor air. Fresh and beautiful by all means now when the sun is (finally) out, but the downside is how bad it can impact our skin. That glowy summer complexion is replaced by unflattering cracks and scales. Just writing it makes me shiver...

Luckily there are a few tricks to thwart the aforementioned. This is what I do:

DRINK WATER
Ok, this isn't latest news. We all know it, but do we really practice what we preach? To be honest I always tend to forget. I'm no fan of pure cold water. A cup of herbal tea/hot lemon water is more me, but that's more or less the same I suppose. Just remember to be a little extra careful with caffeinated drinks such as coffee and black tea as they are diuretic. So bottoms up, babes!

GOOD NUTRITION
Same goes here. The outside is a reflection of your inside. Pretty simple when you think of it. Indulge in watery foods such as soups, vegetable, fruits, berries and good healthy fats. Avoid eating too much salty, dry and crunchy food as these will soak up more of the necessary moisture.

SUITABLE SKINCARE
Do you slather the same cream on all year round? Think again. As the weather changes so does our skin. A lightweight lotion might do the job in the summer, but in a cold climate your skin calls for more. Here a serum comes into play! Unlike a moisturizer that stays on the surface of the skin (due to its bigger molecules) a serum can penetrate all the way down to dermis (where the skin produce its nutrition) and in that way boost, balance and strengthen your skin. If you haven't got any serum – run and buy! It makes ALL the difference.

Moreover, I recommend you to invest and put some extra money in a good skincare routine. Personally I use cleanser, serum, eye cream, lotion and night cream. All natural and organic, of course.

Especially now during the winter it's good to take an extra look at the ingredients. Alcohol and water based products tend to dry skin out. Avoid using if you want to be on the safe side. And last, but not least – stay consistent! Morning and evening. No cheating.

SAUNA
I can't praise it enough. A hot steamy sauna not only do wonders to your skin, but to your whole being. Instead of me writing a Bible about all the benefits, just google it to find out. I have a sauna almost everyday!

HUMIDIFIER
As the temperature drops so does the humidity. If you have some real trouble fighting the freezing (and sneezing) you might consider buying a humidifier. Unfortunately I don't have one myself (yet), but it's said to do wonders, especially during winter.

Good luck and may your skin stay smooth and soft! x

PS. Sharing is caring! What are your tricks to a healthy skin? DS.

Activated
PUMPKIN SEEDS

After my hair mineral analysis, one thing I had to increase was my zinc intake. I got suggested by my nutritionist to eat pumpkin seeds

They contain a lot of...

Zinc (50% of your daily need in only 100 gram) are rich in protein (25g/100g) and the coveted Vitamin E (which keeps your skin young, fresh and elastic and prevents wrinkles to occure).

So, what about this activating thing?

Well, you sure can eat them as they are, but if you want to make sure your body absorbs the good stuff you have to first let them soak in salted water and then dehydrate them again.

Nuts, seeds, grains and legumes all contain an anti-nutrient (phytic acid). It serves as their physiological protectant, a safeguard until germination. When a human eat them it binds to minerals in the gastrointestinal tract. This can cause irritation and digestive strain as we don't produce enough of the enzyme phytase to break this acid down. So, like the name tells you (ANTI-nutrient) it can contribute to nutritional deficiencies if not prepared the right way.

By soaking in salt water followed by low temperature dehydration these phytates and enzymes are easily neutralized. This method increase the bioavailability of important nutrients and active helpful enzymes.

To put it short?

If you, surprisingly, have read this far you hear there is some real science behind this. Simply explained – to avoid digestive problems, nutritional deficiencies and to make sure your body absorbs the nutrition when eating nuts, seeds, grains and legumes you should always soak before you eat them.

This is how you do it:

Activated pumpkin seeds

Organic pumpkin seeds (or other of your choice)
Colander
Big bowl (glass or stainless steel)
Salt of your choice (I prefer sea salt or Himalaya)
Cooking pot
Food dehydrator (or oven)

~

Pour up all pumpkin seeds in the colander.
Rinse them thoroughly in lukewarm running water until water is clear.
Shake the excess water off.
Put the rinsed seeds in a bowl and sprinkle them with some salt.
Boil up water in a cooking pot and let it cool a bit.
Pour the lukewarm water over the seeds.
Let them soak for a minimum of 8 hours.

~

When the soaking is done,
pour the seeds in the colander and rinse them thoroughly again.
Spread them out evenly on one layer.

In a dehydrator:
Dry at 41˚C/105F (to make sure all enzymes are preserved) for around 12 hours.

In a oven:
Haven't tried, but I suggest you let them dry at the same temperature.
Check a little now and then when they feel crispy and dry.
Then they are ready.

Remember! Seeds and nuts are high in fat.
Avoid them to turn rancid – store in your fridge!

Bon appétit!

DIY: Heel Hot Up

So typical me thinking of something for years instead of just doing it. So, a few years ago I got these black heels from my auntie, but never seemed to find a way to use them. It was something about that little cut that bothered me, but I kept them thinking I'm gonna fix them in some way. Someday. Remember THESE were in my mind for a very long time.

Maybe I should just put a bow on those heels? Hmm... Well...

Of course I didn't. Lack of creativity I guess. The months passed, I tried them on, my feelings hadn't changed, so my poor pumps had to stay there, in the darkness of the closet.

And so the other week, when scrolling through Instagram I fell in love again – this time in a pair of black slippers from H&M's Conscious Exclusive collection

Then the forgotten ones screamed at me – "ACTION!"

And suddenly it was just there – my beloved creativity. I'm telling you, when it hits I'm transformed. I enter that world where I can't be reached. I'm obsessed, possessed and nothing can stop me.

I started off with two satin ribbons (each 50 centimeter long) and some pins to secure the bow before I needled it together.

So, I didn't get much sleep last night, but definitely a "new" pair of stunners! Voilà!

What do you think? Scary enough they turned out to look nearly exactly the same as the ones from H&M now when I looked them up again. Oh well, it's definitely an easy and cheap way to hot up a pair of dull heels. Predict these will be my everyday favorites. A classic with a twist, just the way I like it!

Healing Honey

Aaaa... Aa.. Aaatjooo!

Those who are familiar with this know what I mean. The nose is running and the eyes are itching.

Spring is around the corner and so is the pollen season. Blooming trees and green grass by all means (of course we've missed it!), but unfortunately this period can be a real pain in the a-s to some of us, me included. As the au natural lady I am I won't go near any pills, drops or anything pharmaceutical what so ever.

My remedy? HONEY.

Pure raw local honey, a teaspoon a day (starting a few months before everything starts to burst and bloom), and I can enjoy the spring breeze, without a single little sneeze! So amazing. Like I use to say - nature has everything we need.

Chic Vintage
Marbella

And here comes the second designer consignment shop I visited while in Marbella. It's also located in the Old town, just a stone's throw from Déjà Vu. This shop is very small, but stores some really nice pieces from high-end brands such as Dior, Chanel and Louis Vuitton. If you aren't planning a trip to Marbella you can easily shop from home as they have an online boutique as well.

Déjà Vu
Marbella

Here is the first designer consignment shop I visited when we were in Marbella – DÉJÀ VU. It's located in the Old town, just across the street from the big subtropical Parque de La Alameda.

Specialized on vintage and other rare pieces, here you can find anything from that sought-after HERMÈS Kelly in crocodile to a whole dinner set of hand-painted porcelain from prestigious LIMOGES.

It's definitely a must if you're in town!

Ring Necklace

Last Christmas I got this beautiful little gold ring with a quartz crystal from mum and dad. Unfortunately it turned out to be too big for me. Sadly it ended up in a box among my other jewelry, but so the other day I found it again and just like that, I knew exactly what to do with it – I'm gonna use it as a necklace of course!

Budget Beauty
Coconut Oil

After months of hiding in our beanies it's finally time to let our hair out.

But the question is - are we (read our hair) ready?

As we all know the winter comes with more than just snow... Dry skin, choppy lips and split ends are things we have to deal with on a daily basis this (cold and dark) time of the year.

My secret weapon against this? Coconut oil.

It works wonders for everything! Mainly I use it as a hair treatment. I put it in during the day, have a sauna in the evening and also let it stay in over night. The longer you leave it in, the better. Good luck! x

Perfect Pops

Shirt  –  Only  /  Jeans  –  Acne  /  The rest  –  2nd hand

I had almost forgot about my Pops, but now when wearing them I actually realize how great (and comfy) they are. Actually they feel like a wardrobe essential because they really go with everything. Personally I prefer wearing them with heels for a more feminine feeling, but surely they work just as good with flats on relaxed days too. I promise, this is definitely a fit well worth investing in!

Less is More

@saemlstaint on Instagram

The summer and heat finally found us. It's gazing hot outside (and everywhere else), but I'm definitely not complaining. For someone (read me) who tend to freeze for about 300 days a year this is heaven!

Today me and my parents went out on a little boat trip. We stopped by at a beach, had some lunch and just enjoyed life at its fullest. I'm very careful to use sunscreen, preferably one with high SPF since I don't want to get burned, but mostly to protect my skin. As I'm also very strict with the ingredients I decided to go for this sun oil from Eco Cosmetics

Actually I bought it last summer, but got some left. Never really felt I tried it out properly enough, but I'm telling you - it's so much better than I remembered! I have always had a hard time getting a tan, but this is seriously booster in a bottle. I'm gonna place a new order straight away cause this oil is magical. The only cons is the small size and pretty high price, but.. as long as it's pure (only 6 ingredients!) it's kind of worth it, I think. If you happen to find anything purer, please let me know.

Safe sunbathing, people! xx

SHADE OF NOTHING

High ceilings, decorative mouldings and light spacious rooms. Tick those boxes in and you have my dream home. A flawless ground like that and not much more is needed. It speaks for itself. Oh well, this ain't reality yet, but... I'M MOVING and I couldn't be more excited at the moment!! Every single inch of my pretty little mind is totally invaded by interior thoughts. It's almost I can't sleep at night. No, seriously. This is me in a nutshell. Planner could be my middle name.

Materials, furniture, objects, DIYs... And then we have... The colour. I start to sweat, my heart beats faster.

What is the perfect white?

I do like always. I Google it. My heart calms when realizing I'm in great company of so many other lost decorators. It wouldn't be overstated saying white is the absolute hardest shade (cause it's no colour, right?) to choose.

Happen to be in the same (horrible) situation?

Make sure you know what other colours, materials etc you're going to have before choosing your perfect shade of nothing cause white is extremely sensitive. It can appear yellow, blue and green (to only name a few) depending on surrounded colours, objects, flooring etc.

See why I'm ridiculously  pernickety? In my perfectionistic world green walls would mean a disaster..

Thought the greatest impact is still the amount of light in your room. If you wanna analyze the appearance of colour even further (hands up, I admit...) you also take notice to where the room/house is located as the light differs whether your windows are faced to north, south, east or west.

So, what's my imagination of the perfect white?

Warm without looking creamy, but still crips and clean without feeling cold...

Ok, enough of shade choosing and decorating dilemmas for today or insanity will come before we even get the keys.

Ring, ring... "Hello! It's regarding the sofa..."

LAST NIGHT

// Blazer - Sand // T-shirt - Gina Tricot // The rest - Vintage & inherited //

Dinner and some wine with a bunch of crazily wonderful people. Between all good laughs I found out I really love this blazer. Perfect length and shade if you ask me. If black feels too harsh, which I think it sometimes does, navy is a great substitute. This shade adds depth to your look and gives you a fresher, more sophisticated, appearance than plain old black. Just a little though..

ROUGE MOI

Today's project: Get Chanel-ish Rouge Noir nails without spending a cent!

How? I will blend it myself by using plum and signal red! Start with the plum colour, then a thin layer of signal red and finally finish off with a transparent top coat for some extra shine! Voilà, Rouge mooooiiii...
